Terps Racing is the University of Maryland's Formula SAE program — one of the most competitive collegiate engineering environments in the world, drawing nearly 140 teams from universities globally to Michigan International Speedway each year. The 2025–26 season was defined by TR26, one of the only fully autonomous active aerodynamics cars in FSAE history. As a member of the leadership team managing over 150 students, I held the Business & Operations function — a role I built from the ground up, as no formal equivalent had existed within the program before.

My work sat at the intersection of organizational strategy and technical fluency. I built and led a dedicated subteam responsible for the team's external communications, sponsorship pipeline, competition documentation, and social media presence, while managing an annual operating budget of $75,000–$100,000 and a partner network spanning defense primes, aerospace firms, and institutional grant organizations. The team's season culminated in its strongest result in two decades — 9th in the nation, 11th in the world.

What set this role apart was the ability to operate in both directions without losing precision. I could sit with the aerodynamics lead, understand why the three-state center-of-pressure architecture was a fundamentally different claim than a binary FSM, and write competition documentation that reflected that distinction accurately. I could then take the same technical story and frame it as a sponsorship narrative that resonated with a CFO at Northrop Grumman. Bridging that gap — not supporting engineering from the outside, but engaging with it directly — is the function I built and the skill I consider most valuable from this season.

My Role

Team & Operations Leadership

Built and directed the Business & Operations subteam as part of Terps Racing’s leadership team, overseeing a 150+ member organization. Managed a $75K–$100K annual budget spanning procurement, manufacturing logistics, and partner commitments — supporting the full vehicle development lifecycle from early design through national competition.

Business Development & Sponsorship

Secured and stewarded a partner network of 15+ sponsors including Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and ST Engineering. Built the complete acquisition pipeline — outreach strategy, sponsor packets, and post-season appreciation materials — and secured a competitive grant from the Maryland Space Business Roundtable through a formal technical presentation.

Technical Communications & Awards

Authored all major competition documentation, external technical writing, and award submissions — requiring precision at the intersection of engineering accuracy and narrative strategy. Led the Cummins Award response across three judging dimensions. Presented to GM engineers. Achieved a perfect score on the Cost Event. As an engineer myself, I could engage with subteam leads at a technical level before translating their work into documentation that won.

The Car — TR26

TR26 is built on a foundation that almost no other FSAE program in the world has attempted: a fully autonomous active aerodynamics system that adjusts wing configuration in real time based on vehicle state. The 2025 car, TR25, proved the concept — a six-element binary system that completed a full Endurance race at FSAE Michigan without a single mechanical or software failure. TR26 rearchitected it in nearly every dimension. Seven actuated elements across front and rear, continuous actuation at 50Hz via CANBUS replacing the previous binary toggle, a slotless direct-linkage front wing redesign that cut friction and mass, and a dual Raspberry Pi architecture that isolates safety-critical aerodynamic processing from the driver dashboard. Drag reduction increased to 57%. The active system mass stayed under 0.92 kg. The car completed all 10 laps of Endurance — an event many top-ranked teams don't finish — on the way to a top-11 global result. Understanding this machine deeply is what allowed me to write about it with the precision that won.
