FYZICAL Therapy
Market Expansion Strategy · UMD Athletics Partnership · Preventative Care
FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers is a national healthcare franchise operating 600+ locations across the United States, specializing in physical therapy, balance rehabilitation, and wellness services. Their established market is affluent suburban adults aged 45–64 focused on reactionary medical care. The strategic challenge posed to our consulting team was straightforward: how do you expand a healthcare brand built on reactive treatment into a demographic that doesn't think they need treatment yet? I led this project as Project Lead under the UMD Honors College Interdisciplinary Business Honors program, overseeing research direction, data analysis, partnership outreach, and the final strategy presentation to FYZICAL leadership.
The core insight driving our approach was that the 20–50 demographic responds to performance and prevention, not medical necessity. Rather than repositioning FYZICAL's existing services, the strategy was to build a new institutional access point — the University of Maryland's athletics program — and use that credibility to introduce FYZICAL's technology to active students in a context that felt native to their lifestyle. Shockwave therapy served as the technology anchor: a non-invasive, acoustic-wave-based treatment with documented recovery benefits, no downtime, and immediate appeal to athletes looking for fast, effective relief from sports-related pain and overuse injuries.
The project spanned the full consulting lifecycle — from literature review and demographic analytics through active partnership coordination and platform deployment. I analyzed Buxton and Experian consumer segmentation data to validate targeting opportunities, conducted a primary survey of UMD students to quantify the market receptivity, facilitated direct outreach to the UMD Football Department and KINAS, deployed therapist training modules on the Med2Lab platform, and presented a phased expansion roadmap to FYZICAL leadership. The strategy culminated in a four-phase implementation plan: campus mobile clinic, full UMD Athletics partnership, individual NIL athlete sponsorships, and national replication across FYZICAL's network. Following the final presentation, the project was recognized by the UMD Interdisciplinary Business Honors program as a benchmark capstone — used as a reference example for future student cohorts and presented to incoming corporate sponsors as a model for what consulting engagement with the program looks like.
My Role
Six domains of contribution across the full consulting engagement — from primary research through partnership coordination and leadership presentation.
01
Literature Reviews & Strategic Alignment
Conducted research to ground the strategy in published evidence — reviewing literature on preventative care adoption in younger demographics, AI-enhanced care delivery in physical therapy, and healthcare marketing segmentation. This informed how FYZICAL’s existing technology stack could be repositioned as a preventative performance tool rather than a reactive medical service.
02
Shockwave Therapy Investigation
Researched the clinical mechanisms of Shockwave therapy — acoustic waves stimulating tissue regeneration, increasing blood flow, and reducing chronic and acute pain — and built the positioning case for an athletic audience. Analyzed treatment applications across rotator cuff strain, plantar fasciitis, ITB syndrome, and sports overuse injuries to identify the conditions most relevant to an active 20–50 demographic seeking fast, low-downtime recovery.
03
Partnership Precedent Analysis
Evaluated analogous partnership models to validate FYZICAL’s university athletics approach: Hyperice’s dedicated recovery room at University of Kentucky, BeONE Sports’ research collaboration with Rice University, and OneTeam Partners’ growth from $311M to $2B+ through collegiate athlete partnerships. These precedents provided the business case for campus athletics as a proven entry point into the target demographic.
04
Buxton & Experian Analytics
Analyzed Buxton demographic reports and Experian market segmentation data — including device cookie behavior profiles — to validate targeting strategy and identify geographic clusters where the 20–50 preventative care audience was concentrated and underserved. Established baseline demographic metrics against which future FYZICAL expansion could be tracked and measured.
05
Partnership Coordination — KINAS & UMD Football
Facilitated direct outreach and coordination with the UMD Department of Kinesiology and the UMD Football Department, engaging stakeholders including Brian Simmerville, Sue Sherburne, Cierra Flythe, and Merri-Edna Kinas. Structured on-site Shockwave therapy demonstration installations and built the framework for a formal campus athletic partnership agreement.
06
Med2Lab Deployment & Leadership Presentation
Deployed physical therapy training modules on the Med2Lab platform for FYZICAL therapist education and data evaluation, supporting the operational side of the expansion. Led the final presentation to FYZICAL leadership, delivering the phased implementation roadmap and KPI framework: 80%+ athlete retention target, demographic growth in Buxton/Experian reports, satisfaction tracking, and revenue measurement from new partnerships.
Research & Data
The strategy was built on primary survey data, consumer analytics, and validated market precedents — not intuition.

Primary Survey — UMD Campus
Student Exercise & Influence Data
34 UMD undergraduates aged 18–22, equal gender distribution. 73% reported exercising multiple times per week. 78.8% met the exercise frequency threshold for FYZICAL's preventative care positioning. 76% said a UMD Athletics endorsement would make them likely or more likely to use a health service. The data confirmed that targeting active students through an athletics partnership isn't just a strategic bet — it's supported by their demonstrated behavior and stated preferences.
Consumer Analytics
Buxton & Experian Segmentation
Buxton demographic reports profile FYZICAL's existing audience as “Power Elite” and “American Royalty” — affluent, influential suburban couples aged 45–64. Experian segmentation analysis identified the behavioral and geographic distance between this existing profile and the 20–50 target. Device cookie data provided behavioral evidence of the younger demographic's health and fitness engagement patterns, validating the targeting strategy before any partnership investment was made.
The Technology Anchor
Shockwave therapy was positioned not as a medical treatment but as a performance recovery tool — the language the 20–50 demographic already uses.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate natural healing and tissue regeneration — non-invasive, no downtime, and effective across a broad range of sports-related conditions. For FYZICAL, it represented a rare positioning opportunity: a technology already used in elite athletic recovery that could credibly serve as the entry point for a younger demographic, experienced in a mobile clinic context rather than a traditional PT office.

Knee
Patellar Tendinopathy · ITB Syndrome
Ankle
Plantar Fasciitis · Achilles Tendinopathy
Elbow
Tennis Elbow · Overuse Injuries
No Downtime
Immediate return to activity — the key differentiator for active adults who can’t afford long recovery windows
Non-Invasive
Acoustic waves, not surgery or injections — lowers the barrier to entry for a demographic unfamiliar with PT services
Measurable Results
Documented outcomes for sports-related conditions make it credible to an evidence-oriented younger audience
Implementation Roadmap
A four-phase strategy beginning on the UMD campus and scaling across FYZICAL's 600+ location national network.
Phase 01
Mobile Clinic on Campus
Deploy a FYZICAL mobile clinic at UMD, beginning with the Football program as the primary partner. On-site Shockwave therapy demonstrations introduce the brand and technology directly to the target demographic in an athletic context.
Phase 02
UMD Athletics Expansion
Extend the partnership beyond football to UMD Athletics as a whole — broader exposure across multiple sports programs and the full student population, leveraging the athletics department’s institutional reach.
Phase 03
NIL Athlete Sponsorships
With NIL deals available to college athletes, create individual sponsorship relationships with UMD athletes who can authentically promote FYZICAL’s preventative care services to their peer networks — a targeted, high-trust channel.
Phase 04
National Replication
Package the successful UMD campus model and distribute implementation guidelines across FYZICAL’s 600+ location network — beginning with DMV-area clinics and scaling to university athletics partnerships nationally.
Benchmark Capstone — UMD Interdisciplinary Business Honors
Following the final presentation to FYZICAL leadership, this project was recognized by the UMD Interdisciplinary Business Honors program as a benchmark capstone. It is now used as a reference example for incoming student cohorts — illustrating how a consulting engagement should be structured, researched, and delivered — and is presented to prospective corporate sponsors as a model for what a student-led consulting partnership with the IBH program produces.
